Gender (3.3)

In more recent years, I have widened my understanding of gender and the wide range that follows it. One thing from this lesson that fascinated me was Kelly Bakers' insight into the topic of gender from her post “Gender Me, Gender Religion.” She notes how wide the topic discussion is in academia. I liked her note about how religion constructs modern ideas of gender. I was fascinated by her story of Amy Koehlinger have her students “gender” her. I was intrigued by that concept and action. I found it interesting the reactions she got and her reaction to it. I feel that an exercise such as that allows for the context of how people view gender.

Another thing from the lesson fascinated me was the beginnings of Feminism. In one of my classes, we are actually reading excerpts from Simone de Beauvoir’s The Second Sex. We focus on the concept of the “One” and the “Other.” I liked learning the history of the development of gender studies and felt this is important.
